Beyond Learning: Why Every Young Person Has a Story That Can Change the Environment

What if environmental education didn’t stop when the school bell rang?
What if every lesson inspired a young person to plant a tree, reduce waste, protect wildlife, or tell a story that motivated others to do the same?
Across Africa, millions of young people are growing up alongside some of the world’s richest biodiversity and most remarkable natural landscapes. Yet many have limited access to engaging, practical environmental education that connects global challenges with their everyday lives. As climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution, and waste continue to shape the continent’s future, empowering young people with knowledge has never been more important.
That is the vision behind iLearnabout.
By providing free, interactive environmental education that can be accessed both online and offline, iLearnabout is making conservation learning more accessible to schools, NGOs, educators, and communities across Africa. More importantly, it encourages young people to move beyond theory by taking part in hands-on activities, community projects, and
real-world conservation challenges. Instead of asking students simply to learn about the environment, it encourages them to become active participants in protecting it.
Yet education alone is only part of the journey.

The question we should be asking is not simply, “What do young people know?” but rather, “What will they do with what they know?”
This is where storytelling becomes transformative.
Every community has stories worth telling. There is the grandmother who has reused the same basket for decades, long before sustainability became fashionable. There is the market trader finding creative ways to reduce plastic packaging. There are young people organizing community clean-ups, teachers transforming discarded materials into learning tools, and informal waste workers whose daily efforts keep neighbourhoods clean while recovering valuable resources.
These are more than inspiring moments they are examples of leadership, innovation, resilience, and environmental stewardship. When young people learn to recognize these stories, environmental education becomes deeply personal. They begin to see that meaningful solutions are already taking shape within their own communities.
This is where B.Inspired with Stories from Africa (B.ISA) complements iLearnabout’s mission.
B.ISA believes that stories have the power to inspire action, strengthen communities, influence policy, and accelerate social and environmental change. Storytelling is not simply about documenting success; it is about helping people see possibilities, celebrate local innovation, and amplify voices that are too often overlooked.
Together, iLearnabout and B.ISA are creating a powerful bridge between learning and action.
Young people who understand environmental challenges should also be equipped to document them. Those learning about conservation should be encouraged to interview local environmental champions. Students exploring waste management should be able to tell the stories of recyclers and waste workers improving public health. Learners studying biodiversity should feel confident sharing stories about communities protecting forests, rivers, and wildlife.
Through storytelling, environmental education becomes more than information, it becomes participation.
The skills young people develop along the way extend well beyond environmental knowledge. They learn to ask thoughtful questions, listen with empathy, think critically, communicate effectively, and collaborate with others. Whether using a notebook, a mobile phone, or a simple camera, they discover that powerful stories do not require expensive equipment only curiosity, creativity, and the willingness to learn from others.
Most importantly, storytelling helps young people recognise that they are not waiting to become future changemakers. They are already changemakers today.
Across Africa, communities are composting organic waste, restoring degraded ecosystems, protecting wildlife, building circular economy businesses, expanding renewable energy solutions, and finding innovative ways to care for the environment. These stories deserve to be shared—not because they are perfect, but because they remind us that meaningful change is already happening.
When we celebrate local solutions, we inspire more local solutions. By bringing together iLearnabout’s innovative environmental education platform and B.ISA’s expertise in storytelling, this partnership seeks to nurture a new generation of environmentally conscious storytellers young people who not only understand the challenges facing our planet but are confident enough to document solutions, inspire others, and lead change within their own communities.
Because education should do more than prepare young people for examinations. It should prepare them to solve real problems.
And every movement towards a healthier, more sustainable future begins with one person choosing to act.
Sometimes, all it takes is one story to inspire thousands more.
No matter who you are, where you are or where you’re from B. Inspired with stories from Africa.
