Powering conservation
education

“Bringing nature into the classroom can kindle a fascination and passion for the diversity of life on earth and can motivate a sense of responsibility to safeguard it.”

— Sir David Attenborough

iLearnabout is an exciting digital education initiative that aims to fill a critical gap in children’s education, by providing teachers and learners across Sub-Saharan Africa with a range of appropriate, freely available digital resources. Developed by the iAfrica Foundation, a UK charity, iLearnabout will increase awareness and understanding of environmental and conservation challenges and their solutions.

Improving education and changing mindsets is essential in the battles against poverty and environmental degradation.

iLearnabout is a conservation platform that can reach thousands of teachers and children in Africa at low cost. Research and feedback from key partners has reaffirmed the urgent need for a digital resource with exciting and engaging environmental conservation content. Following the impact of COVID-19, where we were forced to adapt to a new way of learning and teaching both remotely and online, the demand for a common e-learning platform to help teach critical lessons on conservation has been reinforced.

All of our futures will be affected by the success or failure of education on the African continent

We consulted with experienced educationalists, national education and conservation organisations to ensure our content is relevant, necessary, and feasible to implement. Our pilot partners carried out a comprehensive pilot study in Kenya with extremely positive feedback and results. This led to the development of an all-encompassing programme of topics and activities for use within schools and organisations free of charge.

iLearnabout materials are now being used by many organisations and schools in Africa as we simultaneously continue further outreach and development.

iLearnabout is mentioned in Professor Sir Partha Dasgupta’s Review on the Economics of Biodiversity, commissioned by the UK Government. Highlighting the importance of education, Sir Dasgupta states that there is a lack of conservation education across the globe and cites iLearnabout as working to change this.

We are currently reaching over 15,000 children through our partners

Providing a comprehensive, immersive and positive learning programme designed to inspire and enable practical action for conservation.

iLearnabout is the first of its kind to bring relevant, interactive e-learning and downloadable resources to African schools, NGOs and after school clubs, on core environmental topics. The content is aligned to the UN Sustainable Development Goals and has been specifically developed to support upper primary and lower secondary environmental education curricula across Sub-Saharan Africa.

iLearnabout provides generic, gender neutral, digital conservation learning content and activities that are modern and fun; FREE of charge to schools, clubs and organisations.
